![]() Most of us prefer to stick to what we’re good at and cultivate an image of expertise. Adult beginners arouse condescension and a touch of pity. Yet by and large the overwhelming majority of those who go to school and start a new activity are young. They find it hard to recruit new, qualified candidates, so investing in the training of their present employees may be a cost-effective solution. Companies say they will spend more on training and education in the future. ![]() As the world of work is transformed by multiple trends, new technologies, new business models, and climate change, it’s increasingly hard to imagine that a person can last a whole career only with what they learned in the first stages of their life. Many people today pay lip service to the idea of lifelong learning. ![]()

This book begins with a slow burn, but I really enjoyed the beautiful language and the intrigue of how Jack came to leave the island behind and what has drawn him back to his old home. Young girls have begun to go missing and his childhood rival Adaira knows that Jack’s skill with music and the magic tied to it might be able to provide answers. ![]() He hasn’t been there in ten years and had no plans to return from his musical studies on the mainland, but he’s been summoned home and he can’t say no. ![]() It begins with Jack returning to his home on the island of Cadence. None of us knows what the next day will bring but Eggers’ likelihoods are safe, reassuring, sometimes weird like this something that won’t rhymeĪnd sometimes totally delightful: ‘Tomorrow most likely / there will be a sky / And chances are it will be blue.’ … ‘Tomorrow most likely / you’ll smell the good smell / of an unseen flower you can’t quite name.’ … ‘Tomorrow most likely / you’ll pick up a stone / striped like a spiderweb or maybe a brain.’ Dave Eggers has penned rhyming ponderings upon the possibilities of what tomorrow might have in store. ![]() ![]() ![]() As much as I enjoyed this book, I found that there were a few scenes that weren’t explained enough and it made some parts hard to understand. Not a great way to entice readers but the shadowy wings, similar to the first cover, improve it. ![]() It was too badly photoshopped on to be believable. I understand they wanted to follow a pattern with the covers but to me it looked like a trashy guy in track pants and no top with a sword on his back. Even though I really liked the cover of Shadows this cover was not great. Negatives – The cover of a book is always a huge part as to why you would select it in a sea of millions of other books. ![]() I often found myself awkwardly smiling or laughing from the witty remarks of Rafa and Gaby which means reading this book whilst in the company of others may incur some strange looks. The storyline had some very real scenes that bring you back from the fantasy world and grounds the story. In some ways you can understand his conflicting emotions and the reasoning behind them although we won’t truly understand it until we find out what happened between the two before Gaby lost her memory. Rafa’s bipolar moods were a bit hard to keep up with but it makes him who he is. Thankfully she still held her attitude which makes her a more interesting protagonist. Gaby was more confident and stronger in this book. Positives – I loved the first book in the series Shadows and my high expectations of Haze were delightfully warranted. As soon as I finished the first book Shadows, I absolutely had to start Haze straight away. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The bad blood between him and his father is known far and wide, and he is aware that he could be named a suspect. When Amos Decker is called to South Florida to investigate a double homicide, the case appears straightforward: A federal judge and her bodyguard have been found dead, the judge’s face sporting a blindfold with two eye holes crudely cut out, a clear sign that she’d made one too many enemies over her years on the bench. ![]() ![]() It will be sought after by travellers and even armchair travellers who dream of finding the last cultural vestiges in this fast-changing and often too-globalised world. You’ll have to read the book to see it, but trust me, Preston is in love with Tara WAY before she falls for him, and there are few things I love more in romance than when a strong, alpha, a-hole hero is a smitten kitten. But while he was total crap at telling Tara how he felt, he demonstrated his feelings in tons of little ways that I won’t give away in this review. I wouldn’t want to work for him for all the money in the world. (Lots of competence porn in this one) Tara is a heroine readers can relate to.
